Guwahati, NE Headlines: The political landscape of Assam has come under the scanner following the release of a detailed report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch. The report, which analyzed the self-sworn affidavits of the newly sworn-in ministers in the Assam cabinet, reveals that all five ministers are crorepatis, while one senior leader faces a criminal case.

Financial Highlights According to the ADR analysis, every minister in this new induction possesses assets exceeding Rs 1 crore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leads the group with the highest declared assets, continuing the trend of high-net-worth individuals holding key positions in the state administration. The report emphasizes the significant financial standing of the cabinet, reflecting a high average of assets among the leadership.

Criminal Records On the legal front, the report points out that Atul Bora, a prominent leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a cabinet minister, has declared one criminal case against himself. The charges in the affidavit include Section 409 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to “criminal breach of trust by a public servant.”

Gender Representation The analysis also highlights a lack of gender diversity within the core cabinet. Ajanta Neog remains the sole woman minister in the council. Notably, Neog made history as the first woman to hold the Finance portfolio in the state of Assam.

The ADR report serves as a transparency tool for the electorate, providing insights into the background, wealth, and legal standing of the people’s representatives.
