Guwahati, May 13, 2026: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today announced a series of stringent austerity measures approved by the Assam State Cabinet. These measures, effective for the next six months, are in solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “7 appeals” to the nation in the wake of the ongoing Middle East crisis and global economic pressures.
Key Measures Implemented:
- Foreign Travel Ban: All foreign travel for government officials, including personal trips, is strictly prohibited for the next six months, with exceptions made only for medical reasons.
- No New Vehicles: The State Government will not purchase any new vehicles during this period to curb expenditure.
- Convoy Downsizing: The sizes of official convoys for the Chief Minister, ministers, MPs, MLAs, and other high-ranking officials will be reduced to lower fuel and maintenance costs.
- Fuel Purchase Cut: There will be a mandatory 20% reduction in fuel purchases for all government vehicles.
- Digital Governance: No physical seminars or workshops will be held for the next six months; instead, all such events will be conducted via video conferencing platforms.
