Guwahati: The Opposition Congress in Assam has called a meeting of its district-level leaders on May 9 to analyse the party’s disappointing performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections, as stated in an official circular.

The circular was issued by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary (organisation) Ramanna Baruah, directing all leaders concerned to attend the meeting in Guwahati.

Baruah said the meeting has been convened following instructions from Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi.

He informed that all District Congress Committee presidents, in-charge presidents and senior vice presidents have been asked to participate in the discussion on the outcome of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

He further stated that the review session will focus on evaluating both the party’s organisational functioning and its electoral performance during the polls.

The Congress had contested 99 of the 126 Assembly seats in Assam but succeeded in winning only 19 seats, while the BJP-led NDA registered a dominant victory with 102 seats.

Earlier on Tuesday, Gogoi had said that all Congress candidates were being invited for a feedback meeting to discuss the election results and review the party’s performance.

Meanwhile, senior Assam Congress leader and former Nazira MLA Debabrata Saikia has dismissed claims made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that he might join the BJP in the future, calling the claim “completely baseless”.

In a message to the people of Nazira, following the 2026 Assembly election results, Saikia said that representing the constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly for the past 15 years had been the greatest honour of his life.
