Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday tendered his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, initiating the process for the formation of a new government following the NDA’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections.
The resignation came soon after the Chief Electoral Officer formally submitted the election results to the Governor, as part of the constitutional procedure required before a new government is formed.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a third consecutive term in Assam, winning 102 out of the 126 Assembly seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party led the alliance with 82 seats, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each.
Sarma is expected to be re-elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party. A meeting of newly elected BJP MLAs is being held under the supervision of central observers J. P. Nadda and Baijayant Panda to finalise the leadership decision.
Following this, the Governor is likely to invite the NDA to form the next government in the state.
Sarma also noted that the Indian National Congress, despite winning 19 seats, may fall short of the 22-seat threshold required to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition. If that happens, the Assembly may not have a formally recognised opposition leader, although parties will continue to appoint their respective legislative leaders.
