Diphu: Tension gripped parts of Assam’s Diphu after unidentified miscreants allegedly hurled petrol bombs at the residence of Congress candidate Raton Engti, police said on Tuesday.

The attack targeted Engti’s home in Bokajan on Monday night, raising concerns over political violence in the region.

According to police officials, at least six petrol bombs were thrown at the premises. However, none of the explosives detonated, preventing any damage or injuries.

Authorities said Engti and his family were inside the house at the time of the incident but remained unaware as the devices failed to explode.

The explosives were discovered the following morning, after which Engti alerted the police. A team reached the spot, seized the crude bombs, and launched an investigation into the matter.

Engti had recently lost the Bokajan assembly seat to BJP candidate Surjya Rongphar by a margin of over 17,000 votes. The incident comes in the backdrop of a significant electoral setback for the Congress in Assam.

Meanwhile, reacting to the party’s performance, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said the party would function as a “proactive opposition” in the state.

Addressing a press conference, Gogoi stated that the Congress, along with other opposition groups, would closely monitor the BJP-led government and raise issues concerning public interest.
