CHENNAI — In a swift series of policy moves following his inauguration, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched a dual crackdown targeting public health and civic order. The new administration has ordered the immediate closure of hundreds of state-run liquor outlets and issued a stern warning to party cadres against defacing public spaces with political banners.
The Official “No Banners” Mandate
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) headquarters issued a strict directive on May 12, 2026, signed by General Secretary N. Anand, explicitly banning the placement of political materials in public spaces. In the official post, the leadership wrote:
“No party comrade shall place banners, posters, or anything of the sort anywhere—in streets, public places where people gather in large numbers, or in ways that cause hindrance to public movement or traffic—on occasions such as birthday celebrations or family events in a manner that inconveniences the general public.”
The announcement further warns that “strict action” will be taken with the approval of the party leader against anyone who behaves in a manner that causes hindrance to the public through such displays.
Massive TASMAC Shutdown Near Sensitive Zones
Alongside the civic order, Chief Minister Vijay mandated the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops. The decision targets outlets located within 500 meters of sensitive areas:
- Education & Worship: The order closes 186 shops near schools/colleges and 276 near religious sites.
- Transit Hubs: 255 outlets near major bus terminals are also slated for immediate shutdown.
- Public Safety: This move addresses long-standing complaints from citizens regarding the proximity of liquor sales to public gathering spots.
