In a significant crackdown on the illegal transport of explosive materials, the Meghalaya Police intercepted a vehicle in the East Jaintia Hills district, recovering a massive cache of 30,000 detonators. Two individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the seizure.
The Interception
The operation occurred during a routine “naka” (checkpoint) inspection in the early hours of May 13. At approximately 2:30 AM, officers stationed at the Umkiang PPP naka point flagged down a suspicious white Hyundai Eon (registration AS-10-A-5916). The vehicle was reportedly traveling from Meghalaya toward Silchar, Assam.
The Recovery
Upon conducting a detailed search of the car, police personnel discovered the detonators hidden within:
- Two cardboard cartons
- One gunny bag
The Superintendent of Police for East Jaintia Hills, Pankaj Kumar Raksania, confirmed that the explosives were being moved without any legal authorization.
Arrests and Legal Action
The two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Kamrul Ali Laskar and Ibrahim Uddin Laskar—both residents of Assam’s Cachar district—were immediately arrested.
A formal case has been filed at the Lumshnong Police Station. The suspects are facing charges under:
- Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)
- Section 5 of the Explosive Substances Act
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have launched a comprehensive probe to identify the origin of the detonators and their intended delivery point. Police are currently working to map out the “forward and backward linkages” to determine if this shipment is part of a larger illegal network operating across state lines.
