The Nagaland Police, through its Drug Disposal Committee, carried out a massive drug destruction drive on Saturday at the Meriema dumping site in Kohima. Seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with an estimated international market value of ₹36,57,62,800 were incinerated following strict legal protocols.
Key Details of the Destruction:
- Case Coverage: The narcotics were linked to 24 different cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
- Substances Destroyed: The bulk of the destroyed contraband included approximately 8.6 kg of Heroin, 31 kg of Opium, and 370 kg of Ganja. Other psychotropic substances like Tramadol and Nitrazepam were also disposed of.
- The Process: The disposal was led by the Superintendent of Police (Narcotics), Poolicharla Ramanaiah, in the presence of DIG (CID) T. Chumrenthung and other high-ranking officials, including magistrates and NGO representatives.
The police department stated that all legal formalities, including court orders from the Special Judge (NDPS), Kohima, and environmental clearances from the Nagaland Pollution Control Board, were obtained prior to the exercise. This move is part of the state’s ongoing “War on Drugs” to combat trafficking and substance abuse.
