A Landmark Defense Engagement

In a massive display of regional defense diplomacy and geopolitical synergy, the defense facility at Umroi, Meghalaya, is hosting the inaugural edition of the joint military drill, Exercise PRAGATI 2026. The multinational joint tactical engagement, which officially commenced on May 20, has brought together over 400 military personnel representing 12 friendly nations to train, learn, and operate collectively in a strategically demanding jungle environment.

The framework of the exercise is anchored around expanding interoperability, fostering closer military-to-military cooperation, and building tactical coordination to respond to shared regional security threats.

Intensive Jungle Operations & Advanced Combat Drills

The training curriculum has pushed troops through complex real-world combat scenarios within the dense, semi-mountainous and jungle terrain surrounding the Umroi hills. Over consecutive days of continuous deployment, the integrated multinational teams participated in several key operational modules:

  • Tactical Maneuvers: Drills featured specialized operations such as rock craft, tactical ambushes, counter-ambush maneuvers, slitherings, and high-intensity jungle lane shooting.
  • Urban Intervention: Troops simulated real-time hostage or counter-insurgency responses via dedicated bus intervention exercises.
  • Skill Sharpening: Competitive sniper firing and close-quarter live battles using AK-203 rifles were organized to rapidly enhance the combat skills, operational understanding, and field confidence of the foreign contingents.

Fostering Camaraderie Beyond the Battlefield

A key organizational highlight of Exercise PRAGATI 2026 is the creation of integrated mixed teams comprising personnel across all 12 nations, breaking traditional communication barriers to ensure seamless teamwork during operations.

Beyond tactical and strategic war-gaming, the exercise also focused heavily on building a spirit of mutual respect and camaraderie through sporting events and informal interactions. Inter-contingent competitions in basketball, volleyball, and tug-of-war were organized to build trust among the frontline soldiers. Military officials noted that the ongoing drills successfully reflect a shared global resolve to ensure regional peace, military stability, and collective readiness.
