External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar co-chaired the 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in New Delhi on Sunday alongside Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono. The high-level meeting, returning after a four-year gap, focused on expanding multi-sectoral cooperation between the two largest democracies in South and Southeast Asia.
The Legacy of the Republic Day Visit
Opening the dialogue, Minister Jaishankar highlighted that the landmark state visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as India’s Republic Day Chief Guest in 2025 infused fresh energy into the bilateral relationship. The visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
“There were very fruitful discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President Prabowo during that visit, and that has certainly imparted fresh momentum to our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar stated.
Key Areas of Expanded Cooperation
The JCM serves as a critical institutional mechanism to review and expand upon commitments made by the top leadership. The comprehensive discussions covered a wide spectrum:
- Security & Defence: Strengthening maritime security and counter-terrorism initiatives, building on the Joint Working Group framework.
- Trade & Investment: Unlocking untapped economic potentials to bolster trade routes.
- Development Sectors: Expanding partnerships in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food security, education, tourism, and cultural ties.
Strategic Regional Alignment
This latest bilateral push aligns directly with the newly established ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (2026–2030). Both leaders emphasized their commitment to maintaining regional stability and prosperity through active cooperation in various ASEAN-led mechanisms.
