BENGALURU

In a seismic shift for Karnataka politics, the longest-serving Congress veteran, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has officially resigned from his top post. The sudden transition comes after direct directives from the Congress high command, instructing him to step down to pave the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the reins of the state government.

KARNATAKA LEADERSHIP TRANSITION

Siddaramaiah (Outgoing CM)
– Resigned on High Command orders after 3 years
– Refused Rajya Sabha Seat; Staying as state MLA

DK Shivakumar (Incoming CM)
– Tallest OBC / Grassroots Congress strongman
– Poised to officially take over state leadership

Rejection of National Politics Role

Addressing the media immediately after putting down his papers, Siddaramaiah confirmed that his resignation was a direct result of the high command’s decision. “I have resigned since I was told to step down by the Congress high command. I will, however, not play any role in national politics,” he explicitly stated. He firmly turned down the party leadership’s alternative offer of a Rajya Sabha seat, declaring that he will continue to serve as an MLA in the Karnataka legislative assembly and focus his contributions entirely on state-level politics.

Resignation Protocol and Future Outlook

Siddaramaiah shared a personal post on social media to formally announce his exit, detailing his visit to Raj Bhavan where he submitted his official resignation letter to the Governor’s special officers in the absence of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who is currently out of the state. Expressing deep humility, he wrote, “Born and raised in a village, I never even dreamed that one day I would become the ruler, minister, leader of the opposition, and twice the chief minister of this state. The fulfillment of such a grand dream is thanks to Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s Constitution”.

Meanwhile, incoming Chief Minister DK Shivakumar—who was heavily credited with organizing the massive Congress victory in 2023 but was initially denied the top spot—is all set to take charge. Shivakumar is widely regarded as one of the tallest grassroots OBC leaders in the nation, setting the stage for a new administrative era in Karnataka.
