Big changes in India’s T20I setup as Shreyas Iyer takes captaincy and teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns a maiden call-up. Suryakumar Yadav is completely omitted from the squads announced for the UK tour and Asian Games.

MUMBAI — The BCCI Men’s Selection Committee has shook up India’s T20I hierarchy by appointing Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain for India’s upcoming international assignments. Top-order batter Tilak Varma has been named as his deputy and vice-captain.

The headline-grabbing addition to the squad is 15-year-old batting phenom Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has received his maiden senior international call-up following an explosive, boundary-filled IPL 2026 campaign.

The Big Omission: Suryakumar Yadav Left Out

The most stunning talking point of today’s announcement is the complete omission of Suryakumar Yadav. Despite captaining India to an undefeated, historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title triumph earlier this year, the star batter has not only been relieved of the leadership role but has been entirely dropped from the T20I setups. Other high-profile names missing from the tactical shake-up include Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Rinku Singh.
