DHALAI | May 18, 2026 A horrific road accident near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Dhalai district claimed the lives of four construction workers and left six others injured on Sunday evening. The tragedy unfolded in the remote Longtarai Valley subdivision when a heavy truck transporting stone chips overturned on a treacherous stretch of road.
According to Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sonacharan Jamatia, the truck was moving from Chawmanu toward the Biju Border Out Post (BOP) to deliver construction materials for border infrastructure. While trying to navigate a steep, dilapidated incline, the vehicle lost momentum. As the driver attempted to reverse, the truck lost balance and flipped over.
Four workers who were riding on top of the open cargo bed were violently thrown onto the road and instantly buried under tons of spilling stone chips. While BSF personnel from nearby outposts rushed to launch a rescue operation, the four victims died on the spot from suffocation and impact injuries. They have been identified as Balidhanjoy Tripura (47), Majida Tripura (50), Bathojoy Tripura (39), and Narjoy Tripura (36).
Six passengers traveling inside the driver’s cabin survived the crash, though one remains in critical condition at a local hospital. The incident has once again sparked public anger regarding the neglected state of border roads, where heavy construction vehicles are forced to operate under highly hazardous conditions. Police have registered a case and launched a formal inquiry.
