SEPAHIJALA | May 10 : The Border Security Force (BSF) has officially handed over the bodies of two Bangladeshi nationals to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday, following a fatal shooting incident along the international border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

The handover took place near the zero point under the jurisdiction of the Kamalasagar police station, an area that has seen heightened tension since the early hours of Saturday.

The Incident: A Midnight Confrontation

The fatal encounter reportedly occurred around 11:15 PM on Saturday near the Dhajanagar border area. According to BSF officials, the sequence of events unfolded as follows:

  • Detection: BSF personnel on routine patrol spotted a group allegedly attempting to smuggle fish fingerlings from the Indian side into Bangladesh.
  • Escalation: When security forces moved to intercept the group, the suspected smugglers reportedly launched an attack using stones and bricks.
  • Self-Defense: After repeated warnings were ignored and the situation intensified, BSF troops fired several rounds from Pump Action Guns (PAG) in self-defense.
  • Casualties: The two individuals hit by the fire were shifted to government hospitals but ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

Victims Identified

The deceased have been identified as residents of Bangladesh:

  1. Nabir Hussain (40)
  2. Md. Mursalin (22)

Cross-Border Fallout

Reports citing the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) suggest that the group was part of a larger operation. It is alleged that nearly 15 Bangladeshi nationals had crossed into Indian territory with the assistance of local Indian associates to facilitate the smuggling activity.

While two lost their lives, several other members of the group reportedly sustained injuries during the skirmish. These individuals managed to retreat across the border and are currently receiving medical treatment in Comilla, Bangladesh.

The “Fish Fry” Syndicate

While the smuggling of “fish fingerlings” may seem niche, local sources indicate it is part of a persistent illegal trade network in the region. The incident underscores the volatile nature of border patrolling, where routine interceptions can rapidly escalate into violent confrontations.

Authorities in Tripura remain on high alert to prevent further incursions and maintain stability along the sensitive Dhajanagar-Kasba stretch.

NE Headlines Note:

Border security remains a complex tightrope walk between enforcement and humanitarian concerns. As investigations continue, the involvement of “local associates” on the Indian side remains a key focus for investigators.
