AGARTALA / NEW DELHI
In a strategic organizational overhaul aimed at infusing youth leadership ahead of upcoming regional ballots, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership has appointed sitting Matabari MLA Abhishek Debroy as the new President of the Tripura BJP Pradesh unit. The appointment, cleared by BJP National President Nitin Nabin and formalized via an official communique issued by National General Secretary Arun Singh, takes effect immediately.
Debroy, a 44-year-old grassroots leader and trained pharmacist, officially assumed charge on Friday, May 29, 2026, at the state party headquarters in Agartala. He succeeds Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, who successfully steered the state unit from 2022 to 2026.
TRIPURA BJP LEADERSHIP TRANSITION
Rajib Bhattacharjee (Outgoing Chief) |
– Tenure: 2022 – 2026 |
– Transition: Moving to full-time Rajya Sabha duties
Abhishek Debroy (Incoming Chief) |
– Designation: Sitting MLA from Matabari Constituency |
– Objective: Reinforce grassroots & prepare for 2028
From Booth President to State Chief: The Strategic Ascent
Debroy’s political trajectory within the saffron party serves as an inspirational blueprint for field workers. Having started his journey at the absolute lowest tier as a booth-level worker, he steadily rose through the party ranks, eventually winning the Matabari (Gomati district) Assembly seat in the 2023 elections by securing a dominant $51.06\%$ vote share.
Addressing a packed gathering of Karyakartas during the ceremonial handover, Debroy stated, “Our motto is Nation First and Self Last. I will work with respect for seniors, learn from them, and engage deeply with the youth to energize the grassroots”.
Key Electoral Roadmaps Ahead
The decision to hand over the reins to a younger, grassroots-oriented legislator is highly tactical, keeping several imminent political battles in mind:
- Immediate Local Elections: Debroy’s primary immediate challenge will be leading the party into the upcoming Village Committee polls and local body elections.
- The 2028 Assembly Elections: The core long-term assignment is restructuring the booth-level committees to consolidate the BJP’s electoral stronghold across the northeastern state well ahead of the 2028 Assembly polls.
Endorsement from Leadership
Welcoming the transition, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha—who along with outgoing chief Bhattacharjee symbolically seated Debroy in the presidential chair—expressed absolute confidence in his vision. “Leadership change is a healthy tradition in our party. A new state committee and Morcha units will soon be formed under Debroy, which will rejuvenate our work culture and boost worker morale,” CM Saha noted.
