GAZA CITY, PALESTINE:

In a major blow to the militant group’s military structure, Israel announced on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, that a targeted airstrike in Gaza City has killed Mohammed Odeh, the newly appointed chief of Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. The operation, executed jointly by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet internal security agency, struck a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood late Tuesday night.

The elimination of Odeh marks a stunningly rapid disruption of Hamas’s command hierarchy. Having formally assumed the role on May 18 following the assassination of his predecessor, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, on May 15, Odeh survived exactly eight days as the top commander before being located and targeted.

The Intelligence Operation and Civilian Toll

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the operation in a joint statement, identifying Odeh as the former head of Hamas’s military intelligence and labeling him a primary architect behind the October 7, 2023, attacks. Security agencies confirmed they had been monitoring Odeh and his aides’ movements for months, eventually launching the strike when he was pinned down in a localized hideout.

The attack completely flattened the target site, resulting in a wider family and civilian toll:

  • Casualties: Palestinian health and hospital officials at Shifa Hospital confirmed at least three people were killed and 12 others injured.
  • Family Impact: According to Hamas-affiliated sources and local reports, Odeh’s wife and children were among those killed in the residential blast.

While family members confirmed his death during a public funeral in Gaza City on Wednesday, they refrained from formally commenting on his rank within the militant hierarchy. Hamas has not issued an official declaration regarding a successor.

A Grim Eid Amid a Fragile Ceasefire

The timing of the airstrike cast a dark, painful shadow over the Gaza Strip as residents prepared for Eid al-Adha, one of Islam’s holiest celebrations. Normally a time of vibrant family reunions, new clothes, and large feasts, the holiday was entirely silenced this year. Approximately 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents remain completely displaced, living inside sprawling, unsanitary tent cities plagued by sewage overflows and critical aid shortages.

The ongoing military operations highlight the extreme fragility of the uneven ceasefire agreement brokered in October 2025. While both sides continue to trade bitter accusations of truce violations, health authorities report that more than 880 Palestinians have been killed in localized strikes since the ceasefire officially took effect, keeping the entire territory in a state of perpetual shock.
