New Delhi: A Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, often referred to as a “flying gas station,” triggered an emergency alert while flying over the Persian Gulf, raising concerns amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

According to flight tracking platform Flightradar24, the US military aircraft squawked the emergency code “7700” while operating near Iranian airspace. The signal indicates a general emergency onboard.

The aircraft had taken off from the Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates and was reportedly involved in ongoing military operations in the region. However, its signals were lost after it passed over Qatar, prompting speculation about its status.

Flight tracking data suggests that the aircraft circled in the air for some time before descending, indicating a possible attempt to manage the emergency situation before landing. The exact cause of the emergency remains unclear.

There has been no official confirmation linking the incident to any hostile action. Iran has not issued any statement regarding the development, and US military authorities have also not released details about the aircraft’s condition or location.

Reports citing Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency highlighted the disappearance based on flight data, but no evidence has emerged to suggest external interference.

The KC-135 Stratotanker has been a crucial asset of the US Air Force for over six decades. Equipped with four turbofan engines mounted under swept wings, the aircraft is primarily used for mid-air refueling of other military jets. It also features a cargo deck, enabling it to carry personnel and equipment, making it a versatile component of US military operations worldwide.
