In view of prevailing cold weather conditions, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced the closure of all schools across the state from January 6 to 10.

According to officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala centre, the northeastern state has been experiencing a cold wave for the past week, with minimum temperatures dropping by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below normal.

In a post on social media, the chief minister said it had been decided to shut all government, government-aided and privately managed schools during the period due to extreme cold conditions.

IMD Agartala Centre head Partha Roy said Tripura has been under the grip of a cold wave over the last one week, leading to a significant drop in temperatures.

“The day’s maximum temperature on Monday was recorded at 16.8 degrees Celsius, which is about 8.6 degrees below the normal. Such conditions are likely to persist for the next three days,” he said.

Roy added that shallow to moderate fog is expected at a few places during night and early morning hours over the next two days.

He said the maximum and minimum temperatures on Tuesday are likely to hover around 18 degrees Celsius and 12 degrees Celsius, respectively.
