Following a historic performance in the 2026 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) high command has appointed senior leaders as central observers to oversee the election of legislative party leaders in West Bengal and Assam.
Key Appointments
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been named the central observer for West Bengal, where the party is slated to form its first-ever government after securing 207 out of 294 seats. Joining him as co-observer is Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
For Assam, BJP National President and Union Minister J.P. Nadda will serve as the central observer. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has been appointed as the co-observer for the state, where the NDA secured a “hat-trick” victory with 82 seats.
Next Steps for Government Formation
The observers are tasked with:
- Meeting newly elected MLAs to build consensus on leadership.
- Finalizing the Chief Ministerial candidates for both states.
- Overseeing the formal election of the Leader of the Legislative Party.
While discussions are ongoing, political circles indicate that Himanta Biswa Sarma is likely to continue his tenure as the Chief Minister of Assam. In West Bengal, the selection process marks a monumental shift in the state’s political landscape following the defeat of the Trinamool Congress.
