Guwahati: Google has begun rolling out its Gemini AI assistant to vehicles equipped with “Google built-in,” replacing the existing Google Assistant with a more advanced, conversational in-car system.
The move marks a significant step in Google’s push to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into everyday consumer technology, particularly in connected vehicles.
The rollout follows confirmation from General Motors that Gemini will be introduced in nearly four million vehicles from the 2022 model year onwards. The update will cover brands such as Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC.
Google has indicated that the rollout will gradually expand beyond General Motors to include a broader range of compatible vehicles over time.
Initially launching in the United States with English language support, the feature will also be delivered to existing vehicles via over-the-air software updates.
Cars with Google built-in have been available since 2020, but Gemini introduces a more natural and conversational interface compared to the command-based interactions offered by the earlier Google Assistant.
With Gemini, drivers will be able to ask more complex and contextual questions while on the road. For example, users can search for restaurants along a route and then ask follow-up questions about parking, menus, or dietary preferences.
In addition to navigation, the AI assistant will support a wide range of in-car functions, including adjusting climate controls, providing real-time directions, recommending music, summarising incoming messages, and helping draft replies through voice commands.
Google said the system is designed to enhance safety by reducing distractions, allowing drivers to manage multiple tasks hands-free while keeping their focus on the road.
