Following a landslide victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya officially approved the appointment on Sunday, May 10, setting the stage for a grand ceremony in the state capital. In accordance with Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has formally invited Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to form the next government. The appointment followed a high-level meeting where Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the wider NDA alliance.
The meeting was overseen by Union Minister JP Nadda and Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini, who served as central observers. Sarma formally staked his claim after garnering the support of over 100 newly elected legislators.
