Honoring a Hundred Years of Artistry
Marking a historic milestone for the performing arts in the Northeast, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma attended the inaugural program of the centenary celebrations of the Tura Natya Samity at Lower Babupara in Tura. Established in 1926, the Samity is recognized as one of the oldest and most respected cultural institutions in the Garo Hills region.
The Chief Minister commenced the year-long centenary celebrations by lighting the traditional ceremonial lamp, unveiling a commemorative plaque, and releasing ceremonial balloons. Addressing an enthusiastic gathering of artists, community leaders, and well-wishers, Sangma described the institution as “a guardian of heritage and a living witness to history,” noting its steadfast dedication to preserving cultural traditions through British India, national independence, and the eventual creation of modern Meghalaya.
Financial Boost for Grassroots Infrastructure
To ensure the institution continues to serve as a vital platform for future generations, Chief Minister Sangma announced a financial sanction of ₹25 lakh dedicated explicitly to infrastructure development and the construction of a new community hall.
“For 100 years, the Samity has been a vibrant hub of art, culture, and creativity, enriching our community and nurturing talent across generations. This support will help strengthen facilities for our young artists and further promote the spirit of unity in diversity through regional cultural activities,” the Chief Minister emphasized.
Culture as a Driver for Economic Growth
In his keynote address, Sangma broader explained his government’s philosophy regarding the state’s creative economy, stating firmly that “development that erases identity is not true development.” He highlighted several key initiatives aimed at converting Meghalaya’s tribal heritage and musical traditions into sustainable livelihoods:
- The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project: Currently supporting over 7,000 local artists by offering performance honorariums ranging from ₹8,000 to ₹50,000.
- New Creative Hubs: Announcement of a world-class Film Institute in Shillong and a dedicated Music Institute in Tura to systematically nurture regional creative talent.
The celebratory event highlighted the rich artistic heritage of the Garo Hills, featuring high-spirited cultural performances, traditional welcome songs, and group dances performed by the Samity’s members that celebrated the theme of unity in diversity.
