OSLO, NORWAY:

The second round of the prestigious Norway Chess 2026 super-tournament in Oslo delivered a masterclass in high-stakes drama, highlighted by Alireza Firouzja’s continued dominance in classical chess and a grueling marathon tiebreaker between World Champion D. Gukesh and America’s Wesley So.

Playing with a lingering ankle injury sustained in a recent tournament, France’s Firouzja registered the only direct classical win of the entire round. He systematically outmaneuvered Indian prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa, pressuring him in the middlegame and converting a favorable endgame into a full 3-point victory. This second straight classical win has pushed Firouzja into a massive, clear lead atop the overall tournament table.

Gukesh and Carlsen Battle Through Armageddon Thrillers

While Firouzja comfortably secured the full 3 points on the main board, the remaining matchups required the sudden-death Armageddon tiebreaker after tense classical draws.

  • Gukesh vs. Wesley So: In an absolute marathon, World Champion D. Gukesh fought Wesley So through a massive 116-move classical grind. Gukesh forced a dramatic queen sacrifice and missed a complex, razor-thin winning sequence late in the endgame. After salvaging the classical draw, So capitalized on a severe time-scramble in the Armageddon replay, completely outplaying Gukesh to walk away with the bonus points.
  • Carlsen vs. Keymer: Local hero and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen had a roller-coaster day against Germany’s Vincent Keymer. Carlsen uncharacteristically missed a winning tactical combination on move 43. Keymer defended accurately to hold the classical draw, but Carlsen rallied back strongly in the Armageddon match to lock in his first bonus points of the event.

Women’s Section: Divya Deshmukh Pips India No. 1 Koneru Humpy

The women’s masters event witnessed fierce competitive parity, with all three classical matchups ending in draws before being settled in the fast-paced Armageddon round.

The day’s most anticipated domestic clash saw reigning World Cup star Divya Deshmukh lock horns with India’s top female player, Koneru Humpy. Following a steady, strategic draw in their classical encounter, Deshmukh displayed aggressive tactical precision in the Armageddon tiebreaker to edge out her senior compatriot.

Meanwhile, current tournament leader Bibisara Assaubayeva survived a completely lost position against China’s Zhu Jiner to pull off a chaotic comeback win in the Armageddon round, maintaining her narrow lead at the top of the women’s leaderboard.

However, since Round 3 matches are scheduled to kick off today (Wednesday, May 27), here is the lineup to keep an eye on:

The biggest matchup to watch in the Open category is the all-India clash between Praggnanandhaa and World Champion Gukesh. In the women’s bracket, India’s in-form Divya Deshmukh will look to build on her momentum against China’s Zhu Jiner.
