SILICON VALLEY / NEW DELHI
In its most aggressive move yet to diversify revenue beyond digital advertising, Meta Platforms has officially launched a sweeping array of consumer paid subscription plans across its multi-billion-user ecosystem. Moving forward, all of the company’s subscription offerings will be consolidated under a single, cohesive brand known as “Meta One”.
This historic monetization drive comes as Meta’s capital expenditure guidance has scaled massively, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg pledging over $600 billion for AI infrastructure over the coming years. Following the announcement, Wall Street reacted positively, sending Meta’s stock climbing over 3%.
1. Paid “Plus” Tiers Launched for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp
Meta has rolled out app-specific “Plus” tiers globally to cater to power users and creators seeking deeper customization and analytics. (While exact India-specific localized pricing is still being finalized, global prices are set between $2.99 and $3.99 per month):
- Instagram Plus & Facebook Plus ($3.99/mo): Unlocks premium capabilities such as seeing aggregate Story rewatch statistics, creating unlimited audience lists, previewing Stories secretly without appearing in the viewer list, and extending Stories past the standard 24-hour mark. Cosmetic upgrades like animated “Super Heart” reactions and custom app icons are also included.
- WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/mo): Delivers intense messaging personalization, including premium sticker packs, unique custom ringtones, exclusive interface themes, and the ability to pin up to 20 additional chats.
2. Premium Meta AI Chatbot Subscriptions
To directly compete with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, Meta is launching testing next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia for two high-performance consumer AI tiers:
- Meta One Plus ($7.99 / ~₹775 per month): Aimed at frequent users who require smooth, continuous image/video generation and extended reasoning tasks.
- Meta One Premium ($19.99 / ~₹1,939 per month): Matches the pricing of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Google AI Pro. It offers identical features to the lower tier but raises the ceiling significantly for complex compute queries and heavy generation workloads.
- Note: While the core Meta AI chatbot will remain free for casual use, power users will eventually hit rigid usage caps unless they transition to a paid tier. Crucially, subscribing to any Meta AI plan automatically grants full access to all app-specific “Plus” premium features across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
3. Professional Creator and Business Ecosystems
Simultaneously, Meta has begun live testing for high-tier professional accounts in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh:
- Meta One Essential ($14.99/mo): Focuses on basic verification badges and proactive impersonation protection.
- Meta One Advanced ($49.99/mo): Dynamically broadens organic search discovery and content reach across Facebook and Instagram. Crucially, it grants direct, priority access to real human support agents to resolve page issues—solving a long-standing pain point for businesses globally.
