SHILLONG / NEW DELHI — The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially released the schedule for the upcoming biennial elections to fill the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya. According to the ECI notification, voting is scheduled to take place on June 18, 2026, with the nomination process commencing in the first week of June.

The election in Meghalaya is part of a broader nationwide exercise to fill 24 Rajya Sabha seats spanning 10 states.

The Election Timeline

The statutory process to elect the next representative to the Upper House of Parliament will follow a strict institutional timeline:

  • June 1, 2026: Issuance of the official Gazette Notification and commencement of the nomination filing window.
  • June 8, 2026: Final deadline for the submission of nomination papers by aspiring candidates.
  • June 9, 2026: Formal scrutiny of all submitted nomination documents.
  • June 11, 2026: Last date allowed for candidates to withdraw their candidatures.
  • June 18, 2026 (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM): Date of polling.
  • June 18, 2026 (5:00 PM onwards): Counting of ballots and declaration of the final results.

The Impending Vacancy

The Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya is currently held by veteran lawmaker Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, representing the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). Dr. Kharlukhi’s six-year legislative tenure is officially set to expire on June 21, 2026, necessitating the timely conduction of the poll.

Political Context & Projections

As the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly serve as the electoral college for this single-seat ballot, numerical strength within the state house will dictate the outcome.

National political analysts indicate that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which holds a robust majority configuration within the state’s governing alliance, is heavily favored to retain control over the parliamentary seat. While opposition blocs are reviewing their strategies, the numerical advantage leans heavily toward a smooth transition or a potential unopposed retention for the ruling alliance candidate.

Regional Elections Landscape

Apart from Meghalaya, three other major Northeastern states will hold parallel single-seat Rajya Sabha elections on June 18, including Manipur (incumbent Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba retiring), Arunachal Pradesh (incumbent Nabam Rebia retiring), and Mizoram (incumbent K. Vanlalvena retiring).
