NEW YORK, June 2, 2026 — Manipuri cinema has achieved a major international milestone at the 2026 New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), with the independent feature film Boong securing three prestigious honors during the event’s closing ceremony.
The four-day festival, organized by the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC), concluded on Sunday after showcasing a diverse lineup of 19 feature films, four documentaries, and 27 short films representing 15 different Indian languages. The festival concluded following a special screening of Boong on May 29.
Triple Win for Manipuri Narrative ‘Boong’
The critics’ panel and jury highly praised Boong, cementing its position as a standout regional film on the global stage:
- Best Director: Filmmaker Lakshmipriya Devi was awarded the Best Director trophy for her exceptional storytelling.
- Best Child Actor: Young protagonist Gugun Kipgen was recognized with the Best Child Actor award for his compelling lead performance.
- Best Debut Film: The festival’s critics’ panel officially named Boong the Best Debut Film of the edition.
Other Major NYIFF 2026 Award Winners
The festival also recognized outstanding artistic achievements across various other categories:
- Best Actor: Nikhil Vaid was adjudged Best Actor for his performance in Vinnukut.
- Best Actress: The award was shared three ways among Meenakshi Jayan (Mahajan), Victoria Thek for her standalone performance, and Prajakta Deshmukh (Tighee).
- Non-Fiction & Shorts: Deja Vu emerged as the winner of the Best Documentary Feature award, while Jo’s Turn was selected as the top narrative short film.
Expanding Global Appeal of Regional Stories
Festival organizers pointed out that the presence of 15 languages in this year’s lineup reflects the expanding global appeal of India’s regional cinema, demonstrating that locally rooted stories successfully engage audiences beyond national borders.
