Cross-Border Casualties and Ukraine’s “Logistics Lockdown”

Recent exchanges of fire have resulted in three deaths in the border region between Russia and Ukraine.

  • Two civilians were killed and two others were wounded in Russia’s Bryansk region, after Kyiv targeted the settlement of Suzemka with artillery fire.
  • According to acting Governor Egor Kovalchuk, the strike occurred on Friday.

Ukraine has been actively pursuing a strategy it refers to as a “logistics lockdown” or “long-range sanctions”.

  • The strategy involves using long-range drones and heavy weaponry, targeting locations over 30 kilometres from the front line.
  • These mid-range strikes focus on oil refineries, bridges, logistics, and roads, as a means of halting Russian front-line operations.
  • In Russia’s central region of Tatarstan, a drone strike hit an apartment building, injuring three people, while industrial facilities were also hit.
  • Regional head Rustam Minnikhanov stated that production was not suspended, at the unnamed facilities known for key oil processing and petrochemicals.
  • The city of Togliatti faced a drone attack overnight, which is located on the Volga River, and is home to the country’s biggest carmaker Avtovaz.

Fuel Shortages in Russian-Occupied Territories

The targeted attacks on infrastructure are beginning to show tangible effects on local fuel supplies.

  • Kyiv’s escalating campaign against supply lines, has caused fuel stations on the Crimean Peninsula to run out of petrol.
  • Witnesses in Sevastopol reported a lack of fuel at most local stations, which are struggling to keep up with a rationing regime imposed in recent weeks.
  • In the resort town of Yevpatoriya, a witness reported a long queue outside the only open petrol station.
  • Local authorities have imposed fuel rationing regimes, with some foodstuffs also running short.
  • Only two regions in Siberia have officially confirmed fuel shortages, while Moscow denies any problems with fuel supplies, stating disruptions are due to panic buying.

The ‘Flamingo’ Missile Reaches 900 km Inside Russia

Amplifying its deep-strike capabilities, a Ukraine-made ‘Flamingo’ missile has successfully hit a target 900 km inside Russia. Open-source intelligence and regional reports indicate the cruise missile struck the Progress factory in Cheboksary, a vital facility known to produce the Kometa antennas that enable Russian drones and missiles to bypass air defenses.

Geopolitical Fallout: Baltic Fears and UK Defence Resignation

The prolonged conflict continues to generate significant international shockwaves well beyond the front lines.

  • Baltic Anxiety: People in the Baltic states are reportedly “on edge”, as they increasingly fear a potential spillover of the Russia-Ukraine war into their territories.
  • UK Political Upheaval: Britain’s defence secretary, John Healey, has quit his position over disputes regarding defence spending. Healey abruptly resigned citing major concerns that the government’s Defence Investment Plan falls dangerously short of what is required to protect the nation amidst rising global threats and the ongoing war in Europe.

World Chess Body Suspends Russia

In the sporting arena, the world chess body has officially suspended Russia over its activities in occupied-Ukraine. The immediate suspension by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) stems from Russia’s forced integration of regional chess organizations located in occupied Ukrainian territories, which directly violated a compliance order issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). While individual Russian players may still be eligible to participate in international tournaments under a neutral flag, the nation is barred from competing in all FIDE team events.
