The death of Paresh Borgohain, a 47-year-old contractual canteen worker, on May 10 inside the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) Digboi refinery has triggered widespread outrage and calls for an investigation. Borgohain, a caterer for M/S Vidya Caterers, reportedly collapsed near the Sulphur Distillation Unit (SDU) sub-station while delivering meals.
Key Concerns Raised:
- Medical Negligence: Co-workers alleged that when Borgohain was rushed to the refinery’s First Aid Centre, no doctor was on duty. The facility was reportedly being managed by a nurse and an assistant, raising alarms about emergency preparedness.
- Surveillance Gaps: Despite high security spending, the incident site was not covered by CCTV. Management clarified that cameras only monitor “vital installations,” leaving operational areas unobserved.
- Food Safety Standards: Questions have been raised regarding hygiene at the AOD canteen after reports surfaced that Borgohain had eaten there shortly before his shift.
- Management Apathy: The deceased’s family alleged that neither refinery officials nor the contractor visited them following the tragedy.
An FIR has been lodged seeking a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the death and demanding compensation for the bereaved family. Labor organizations are now demanding full-time doctors at the refinery and expanded CCTV coverage to prevent such oversights in the future.
