In a landmark move to strengthen medical education and healthcare services in the Northeast, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned ₹273.46 crore for the expansion and infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced the approval on Friday, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for this substantial financial assistance.
Funding Breakdown and Seat Increase
The project is being funded under a centrally sponsored scheme with a 90:10 cost-sharing ratio between the Centre and the State.

Key Highlights:
- Infrastructure: The funds will be utilized for upgrading the existing facilities at AGMC and GBP Hospital to accommodate the increased student intake.
- Academic Session: The additional seats are set to be available from the 2026-27 academic session.
- Specialty Growth: The 83 new PG seats will cover 19 critical and specialty disciplines, including General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, and Anesthesia.
- A “Record” Rise: Following this expansion, Tripura will reach a record total of 550 MBBS seats and 196 PG seats, the highest increase recorded in the last four years.
This expansion is expected to significantly reduce the state’s dependency on outside medical institutions and provide better opportunities for local medical aspirants.
