Kangpokpi, May 13, 2026: In a shocking incident that has intensified tensions in Manipur, four church leaders were killed and several others injured this morning during a violent ambush in Kangpokpi district. The victims, members of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA), were traveling from Churachandpur to Kangpokpi after attending a church conference when their vehicles were intercepted between Kotzim and Kotlen villages around 10:25 AM.
Key Details of the Incident:
- The Victims: Among those killed is Rev. V. Sitlhou, a prominent TBA leader and former General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention. Reports identify other casualties as Rev. Kaigoulen and Pastor Paogoulen.
- Suspected Involvement: While the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) Kamson faction is suspected of being behind the attack, the group has officially denied any involvement.
- Government Response: Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh convened an emergency meeting with ministers and Naga MLAs at 5:30 PM today to address the security situation. The attack occurred just two days before his scheduled visit to Churachandpur.
- Outcry and Protests: The Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) and Thadou groups have called for an indefinite shutdown in Kangpokpi and Churachandpur. The KSO has specifically demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the killings.
