Meghalaya: The Meghalaya government has approved a proposal for the direct purchase of land in East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills to support upcoming infrastructure projects and strengthen long-term development planning.
The decision, cleared by the state cabinet, aims to create a dedicated land reserve to prevent delays in public projects caused by challenges in land acquisition.
According to officials, the move is expected to fast-track the development of key facilities such as administrative centres, hospitals, universities, and other essential services, particularly in remote and underdeveloped regions.
Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said that the limited availability of land has become a significant hurdle for large-scale development works in the state. He noted that securing land in advance would help ensure smoother execution of future projects without administrative delays.
As part of the plan, the government will acquire approximately 93.5 acres of land in the Rongjeng area of East Garo Hills at an estimated cost of ₹7 crore. In North Garo Hills, around 26 acres in the Mendipathar region will be purchased for approximately ₹3.9 crore.
The initiative reflects the state’s evolving strategy to streamline infrastructure development and address long-standing bottlenecks in land availability.
