Two men have been arrested following the brutal gang-rape of a 30-year-old woman inside a private sleeper bus in Northwest Delhi. The incident, which took place on the night of May 11, has sparked nationwide outrage, drawing chilling parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
The Incident and Investigation
According to the Delhi Police, the victim, a factory worker and mother of three, was returning home when she was allegedly dragged into a private bus near the Saraswati Vihar area. The vehicle, which usually plies between Delhi and Bihar, was then driven toward Nangloi while the assault occurred.
The accused have been identified as Umesh Kumar (40), the bus driver, and Ramender (45), his helper. Both are residents of Uttar Pradesh.
Legal Action
A First Information Report (FIR No. 157/26) has been registered at the Rani Bagh Police Station. The charges include:
- Section 64(1) (Rape)
- Section 70(1) (Gang Rape)
- Section 3(5) (Common Intention)under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The police have seized the sleeper bus for forensic examination, and the victim’s statement has been recorded before a magistrate under Section 164. Authorities are currently scanning CCTV footage from the 7-kilometer route to strengthen the evidence against the accused.
