GANGTOK — The Union Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has officially announced a massive ₹583 crore financial package for Sikkim. Aimed at scaling up the state’s eco-friendly footprint, the package positions Sikkim as India’s leading national model for sustainable development, eco-tourism, and premium organic agriculture under the Centre’s ‘Act East’ vision.
The announcement was spotlighted during the state’s 51st Statehood Day celebrations in Gangtok, attended by Union MDoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and other top dignitaries.
“Mission Sikkim Organics” to Target Global Exports
A cornerstone of this package is the ambitious “Mission Sikkim Organics” initiative, launched with a dedicated outlay of ₹360 crore. This program is strategically designed to transform the state’s agriculture sector into a globally integrated, premium organic economy, directly benefiting over 66,000 farming families across the region.
- Financial Breakdown: MDoNER will contribute ₹85 crore directly toward immediate infrastructure, aggregation systems, and strict program coordination. The remaining funds will flow via a multi-stakeholder convergence structure involving various Central Ministries, NABARD, APEDA, and private-sector partnerships.
- Fixing Value-Chain Gaps: Despite becoming India’s first fully organic state in 2016, Sikkim faced critical infrastructural gaps. The new mission will establish modern cold storages, district organic yards, yield-improvement protocols, crop traceability, and rigorous certification frameworks to seamlessly export signature crops like large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, and buckwheat to lucrative markets in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.
₹223 Crore Infrastructure Boost
Alongside agricultural reforms, the Centre inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for 21 developmental projects valued at ₹223 crore. These projects primarily focus on elevating public connectivity and opening regional economic corridors:
- Connectivity & Public Works: Constructing and upgrading key local roads, bridges, and essential public transit assets.
- Mega Tourism & Education Projects: Reviewing high-priority assets, including the Temi Tea Estate development in Namchi, the Khangchendzonga State University campus under construction at Tarku, and the landmark Bhaleydunga Skywalk project funded via the PM-DevINE scheme.
While opposition parties like the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) have welcomed the funds, they have simultaneously urged the ruling state government to enforce strict compliance. They noted a 2024 organic certification suspension incident to highlight that the new central funds must be managed with absolute accountability to preserve the state’s pioneering organic legacy.
