GANGTOK: In a historic moment for the Himalayan state, the Sikkim Police is set to be formally conferred with the prestigious President’s Colour Award (widely known as the ‘Nishan’). With this ultimate institutional recognition, Sikkim etches its name as the 15th state police force in India and only the third in the Northeast region—following Assam and Manipur—to receive the elite national honour.
The formal presentation will cap off President Droupadi Murmu’s official three-day itinerary in the state. As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, President Murmu will personally present the ceremonial flag and official insignia during a high-profile Colour Presentation Parade.
The Symbolism of the ‘Nishan’ The President’s Colour is the highest honor bestowed upon any police organization in India, recognizing decades of unblemished operational excellence, structural integrity, humanitarian responses during disasters (such as the devastating 2023 GLOF floods), and steadfast border management.
Director General of Police (DGP) Akshay Sachdeva highlighted that the honor belongs collectively to generations of police personnel and the cooperative, law-abiding citizens of Sikkim. Following the presentation:
- The Flag: The state force will hoist a specially designed ceremonial flag measuring 3 feet 9 inches in length and 3 feet in width, adorned with a golden fringe and the official Sikkim Police insignia.
- The Uniform: All 6,500 active personnel across the state will be officially entitled to wear a special customized emblem on the left sleeve of their uniform as a lifelong badge of pride.
