AGARTALA, June 3, 2026 — Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to inspect key stretches of the India-Bangladesh international border during his official visit to Tripura on June 5. Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha disclosed the upcoming visit on Tuesday during a public event at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala.
Border Inspection and Security Review
The high-level visit comes at a time of heightened focus on regional security and border infrastructure management.
- Areas of Inspection: While the final itinerary is being finalized, the Home Minister is highly likely to review border security arrangements in the West Tripura and Sepahijala districts.
- State Request: The Tripura state government explicitly requested the Union Home Minister to assess the international border firsthand and review prevailing security challenges.
- Key Focus: The inspection will focus on auditing existing border infrastructure, reinforcing anti-infiltration protocols, and checking defensive deployment layouts. Tripura shares an extensive 856 km long border with Bangladesh, making it exceptionally vulnerable to trans-border smuggling and illegal infiltration.
Implementation of Smart Fencing Systems
To permanently mitigate cross-border security challenges, the Central Government is actively rolling out advanced monitoring technology.
Chief Minister’s Briefing: “Smart bordering and fencing systems are now being introduced, and decisions have already been taken for states including Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal,” Chief Minister Saha stated.
The introduction of this advanced smart fencing technology will significantly enhance automated surveillance capabilities, helping security forces secure vulnerable patches along the border more effectively.
Shillong Plenary Session and Agartala Heritage Project
Before arriving in Tripura, Amit Shah will attend the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on June 4.
Aside from security reviews, the visit will also highlight cultural tourism expansion in the state. The Home Minister is expected to lay the foundation stone for a prestigious Heritage Hotel project at the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Agartala. The landmark conservation and tourism project is being developed by the Tata Group to promote the state’s rich history and boost local tourism.
