In a significant breakthrough against cross-border narcotics trafficking, the Crime Branch of Tripura Police has filed a comprehensive chargesheet against six individuals before a special court in the West Tripura district. The case pertains to one of the largest drug hauls in the state’s recent history—the massive interception and seizure of over 1.07 lakh bottles of Phensedyl, a banned codeine-based cough syrup, valued at nearly ₹2 crore in the illicit market.
The investigation, which initially involved the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Special Task Force (STF) due to its inter-state ramifications, was later transferred to the specialized Crime Branch to completely map out the supply network.
The Logistics of the Syndicate
The case originates from a high-profile raid conducted in October last year at the Jirania railway station, located on the outskirts of Agartala. Acting on actionable intelligence, security forces intercepted a massive consignment hidden inside an Agartala-bound express train.
A thorough search uncovered the contraband stashed carefully within specialized cargo holds. Codeine-based syrups like Phensedyl are highly restricted and banned for open commercial transit in India due to their widespread abuse as cheap addictive substances, with a significant chunk often bound for illegal cross-border smuggling into neighboring Bangladesh.

The Accused Profile and Seek for Custodial Trial
The meticulous multi-state probe conducted by the Crime Branch led to tactical arrests spanning multiple regions of the country, revealing a well-entrenched network of financiers, suppliers, and local handlers. The individuals named in the final police report include:
- The Local Facilitators: Rajib Dasgupta and commercial transporter Arun Kumar Ghosh, both operating out of Agartala.
- The Inter-State Suppliers: Himangshu Bai and Sourav Tyagi, apprehended from Delhi, along with Deep Prakash Gupta, tracked down and arrested in Uttar Pradesh.
- The Absconding Kingpin: Apurba Ranjan Das, a resident of Boxanagar in the Sepahijala district, who is identified as the prime operator of the racket and currently remains at large.
The investigating agency submitted the formal chargesheet on Saturday, encompassing all six accused under stringent sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Recognizing the financial muscle and influence of the cartel, the Crime Branch has strictly appealed to the special court for a custodial trial, arguing that allowing the accused bail could compromise the judicial proceedings or lead to the tampering of crucial prosecution evidence.
