The Strike at Chaman Phatak
In one of the most devastating insurgent operations in recent months, a powerful suicide car bomb targeted a moving shuttle train in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, killing at least 24 people and wounding over 70 others. The blast occurred near the Chaman Phatak (crossing) signal as the train was transferring Pakistani military personnel, security forces, and their families from the Quetta Cantonment area to connect with the long-distance Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express.
According to senior provincial and railway ministry officials, an explosive-laden vehicle directly rammed into one of the train’s moving carriages. The immense force of the collision derailed the engine and three coaches, causing two carriages to completely overturn and burst into flames, sending massive plumes of black smoke over the residential neighborhood.
High Casualties and Collateral Devastation
Security forces immediately cordoned off the location as emergency protocols were declared across all government hospitals in Quetta. On-duty doctors and paramedical staff were summoned under emergency mandates to manage the influx of critically wounded individuals.
The impact of the blast extended far beyond the tracks, causing widespread destruction in the immediate vicinity:
- Casualty Demographics: Security officials confirmed that multiple army servicemen and Frontier Corps personnel were among the dead and wounded.
- Neighborhood Damage: Because the attack occurred within a residential zone, several adjacent apartment buildings suffered extensive structural damage, and some of the fatalities included local residents.
- Vehicular Loss: At least ten vehicles parked along the parallel road were completely incinerated or crushed by flying debris, while windows of buildings blocks away were shattered.
BLA Claims Responsibility
Shortly after the explosion, the banned separatist militant group, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), issued an official statement claiming full responsibility for the coordinated strike. Jeeyand Baloch, the spokesperson for the outfit, described the incident as a highly organized “fidayeen” (suicide) operation executed by its elite squad specifically targeting “occupying forces.”
The BLA has rapidly escalated the ferocity of its urban operations over the past few years, routinely targeting transport infrastructure, security installations, and investments tied to the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti strongly condemned the “heinous bomb explosion,” promising strict retaliatory counterinsurgency actions and asserting that such acts would not weaken the state’s resolve against terrorism.
